La Doublure
Publish and Be Damned at the ICA, London, 2012
Raymond Roussel’s first novel La Doublure (1897) is reprinted on paper bags so that each page, although it remains flat, has a potential volume. In French, ‘la doublure’ has multiple meanings, including ‘the understudy’, ‘the lining’
and ‘the double’. This gesture reveals a second, hidden surface of the text and opens up its support, the page, as an empty volume. A book of hollow pages.
